5 out of 5 stars Asus comes through time and time again...   July 27, 2010

This is my third Asus notebook/netbook that I am purchasing. As has always been the case, Asus makes a quality product that stands up to some light abuse. The overall finish of this particular netbook is outstanding. No glossy spots (not even the screen) to grab fingerprints, a nice flat track pad, unlike the dimpled ones they've been using the past year or so, And a good specification list, make this a great buy.

My only complaint is Windows 7 Starter edition. I have been using Windows 7 for over a year now and have learned to love all of the great things that Windows 7 offers in comparison to previous windows versions, but the starter edition is TERRIBLE. You cannot change your desktop background, you get no aero peek, or any aero glass features. And overall, Windows 7 is slow slow slow to boot on this netbook. I have plans to reformat it with Windows XP like my other Asus netbook, which boots quickly and runs great.

Overall, I was very pleased with my third computer from Asus.

This item was everything I thought it would be. It's perfect for college. It's light weight so not a problem being to big and bulky.

3 out of 5 stars Needs a lot of security and performance configuration   July 26, 2010

I was quite surprised to find that as shipped with Windows 7 Starter the trialware antivirus program was NOT installed, and NO FIREWALL was active. Hence, I unwittingly connected to the internet for a half hour without any protection. I installed my own choices for antivirus and antispyware, and used some online scans, and found nothing other than tracking cookies. I was lucky.

I shortened the reboot time from 78 seconds to 55 seconds by configuring bootup to use 2 processors (Start, msconfig, Boot, Advanced options).

Changed 7/28/2010: I've spent some time uninstalling unwanted programs and preventing startup items; one Asus program (AsusSender) seems to spawn new instances. My machine has 5 entries in msconfig's startup tab.

I ordered a 2 GB stick of RAM to upgrade from the factory installed 1 GB.

The machine seems too new to be recognized by the Intel Chipset Identification Utility or by CPU-Z (I'm looking for driver updates; there may be none available yet). It's not trivial to use the ASUS support web site.

The keyboard is satisfactory for light work. Battery life is satisfactory. Video and audio are usable but not really a pleasure.

Added: After using this netbook for several days, I'm noticing some eyestrain.

Added 7/28/2010: After two-finger scrolling, the touchpad is sometimes set to clicklock -- scrolling continues when just dragging the mouse with one finger. Also, when attaching an external monitor, a very short duration popup claims that the optimal setting is 800X600 and invites one to click here... then disappears.

Changed 7/28/2020: I would recommend this netbook for people willing to spend hours reconfiguring. Downgraded from 5 stars to 3 as more intractable problems turn up.

Had several problems with the Operating System the first few weeks after installing commonly used software - Execl, Word Photoshop. The touchpad is difficult to control. It could use at least one more USB port.
